The illusion of Jordanian reform

The illusion of Jordanian reform

It seems that there is a misunderstanding in the minds of Jordanian decision makers as to the definition of the concept of reform, or alternatively there is an intentional objective of creating confusion in this respect! There is a clear effort to denote reform with specific activities or milestones regardless of the content of these deliverables. For instance, the widely praised and cited constitutional amendments by the Jordanian regime drops the fact that these amendments only touched procedural and judicial matters while overlooking the real substantive political norms in the constitution that makes the political system different from one country to the other and substantiates the real democratic facets of a certain regime.

By the same token, there is a strange insistence by the state that the production of an elections law and holding elections on its basis is regarded as true and sufficient reforms by the Jordanian regime.  What is intentionally overlooked in this vision is the quality and substance of such a law and eventually the quality of the outcome of such elections! To produce an elections law is something, but where its norms are far from assisting in the evolution of proper democracy and the empowerment of political parties with the quest of forming parliamentary governments is something totally different.  This cannot be called reform at all. To the contrary, it is a clever way to only achieving meaningless and substantively void actions that are presented to the local and international communities as reform. Accordingly, the outcome of the upcoming elections is already doomed and only a misguided person would put his money on a bet that such elections will bring about genuine political change in Jordan.

As a conclusion, and after a year or more of national calls for reform and over 800 demonstrations by Jordanian people calling for proper pluralism and democracy, one can sadly say that nothing has changed in this country, or at least nothing substantive and meaningful has been put forward by the state. Reform in Jordan is a misleading concept which is being manipulated these days for causes that eventfully will prove detrimental to the regime itself.
